Wisdom of the Elderberry Syrup
High levels of powerful plant compounds in elderberry have been shown to support the broader immune system making it effective against cold and flus. Research has shown that the severity of symptoms and the duration of a cold may be reduced when taking an elderberry supplement. It makes it possible to treat colds and flus without the use of antibiotic medicine.
Anthocyanin-rich foods are an important part of a healthy diet. But researchers are still investigating their role in treating and preventing specific diseases. Overall, evidence suggests that anthocyanins may provide a range of health benefits.
Wisdom of the Elderflower Healing Salve
Elderflower is a traditional herbal remedy that contains natural compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids that soothe the skin, bringing relief to those suffering from symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.
Wisdom of the Elderflower Skin Healer and Wisdom of the Elderflower Skin Lotion include this and other organic herbs used for thousands of years to make skincare lotion. A cold effusion of the dried herbs is slowly soaked in organic sunflower oil and then combined with beeswax. Organic elderflower (from the Sambucus nigra plant), yarrow, aloe vera, and rose petals combined with organic sunflower oil soften rough, chapped and dry skin.
Research suggests that elderflower and other organic herbs help to treat psoriasis by providing deep moisture and soothing eczema-prone skin by relieving itching and inflammation due to its:
• Anti-inflammatory Properties: Elderflower contains bioflavonoids and chlorogenic acid, which act as anti-inflammatory agents to reduce redness, swelling, and general discomfort from skin flare-ups.

EWF's social and economic development initiative
EWF's spring, summer, fall and winter interns have learned how to cultivate, harvest and market value added elderberry products. Interns report they are learning a lot, including how to respect the plants and berries and express gratitude; how to harvest ethically from the farm, native plant nursery and other sites in the valley; and how to produce syrup and salve so it can be provided to increasingly health conscious consumers in our community. They learn to perform a patch test to ensure they do not have an allergic reaction or skin sensitivity.
EWF has been developing this social and economic development project since 2020 when we planted our elderberry patch and formed Blue Elderberry Farm LLC. It is proving to be a promising microenterprise. We developed the feasibility study in 2021 followed by the business, marketing and financial plan and continued to revise it the past several years. This helped us through multiple phases to become a sustainable cottage business. We are showing our interns and community that Native American herbalists can develop a business with the potential for success, and perhaps multi-generational prosperity for their families.
